Off if you are using a high shutter speed.

Some users say that it should be turned off for very fast shutter speeds. Personally I have never been able to see whatsoever difference between On/Off at with fast shutter speeds, so I mostly leave information technology on unless I know that I volition not be using any shutter speed slower than 1/(2xfocal length).

Information technology is an electro-mechanical device. There is a lag between movement and bounty. At high shutter speeds you tin can see this in high dissimilarity photos. Take a white bird with a dark groundwork. Yous will see it. I do. Especially at long focal lengths.

It is possible, just I have tried it in the by with my EC14+50-200 SWD and a test chart and could see no difference. When I got my 300mm since it used dual stabilization I wanted a quick recheck. I tested it with the MC14 at 1/1250 (420mm) photographing the pixels on my 2550x1440 PLS monitor and could run into no difference in clarity of the pixels.
I generally turned it off for higher shutter speeds in the past, when it could exist controlled by Mysets, but with the 300mm the stabilization cannot be controlled by Mysets - the switch on the lens determines stabilization and thus requires moving the switch to turn stabilization On/Off. When you want to become immediately from a sitting bird at 1/50 to a flying bird at 1/1600, there is no time to move a switch on the lens and printing a button for a Myset, so it now stays on and the Myset controls SAF/CAF and shutter speed and not stabilization.

By performing extensive tests using MTF Mapper to measure sharpness, I accept plant that, when using a tripod, it makes no difference whether Image Stabilization is on of off. Here is an example:
The actual numbers vary depending on the lens being used only the full general shape is the same.
The dip in resolution centred around ane/60 2nd is acquired by vibration induced past the shutter opening for the exposure (and then called shutter daze). The Anti-Daze (0 sec) feature greatly reduces this effect by introducing a short delay betwixt the opening of the shutter and the outset of the exposure. Silent Shutter eliminates the trouble entirely because the shutter does move at all. The penalty for using Silent Shutter is that it takes around 1/20 2d for the sensor to be read out regardless of shutter speed, making it susceptible to subject movement or camera shake.
I take also performed manus held tests but accept not been able to produce consistent results because I have plant it impossible to split the issue of camera motility from the effect of focus changes. MTF50 is very sensitive to focus errors. To obtain consequent results focus must be performed once at the start of the test and left unchanged for the residual of the measurements.

I'm not currently an Olympus user (I do have an OM-two!) but I e'er turn IS off at high shutter speeds with telephoto lenses and moderate shutter speeds when using wide angle lenses. If I am post-obit a subject by changing photographic camera pointing, I use a fast shutter speed and turn IS off.
IS doesn't improve sharpness nether these weather condition, so why not plow off this mechanical device?
Re: Image stabilizer ON or OFF ?
Are we talking 2-axis, 3-centrality or 5-centrality? Definitely off for tripod use with two-axis, not so clear with the others, although the manual continues to recommend off.
With five-axis I usually leave it on car-IS.
Cheers,
Rick

Re: Image stabilizer ON or OFF ?
Thank you. All-time factual based information on this issue. I take switched to anti stupor (0) but withal turn it off when using a tripod. The data suggests this may not be a real need.
